Rome is incredible! We stayed within the walls of the old city. I would have attempted to walk from the train if I'd been alone, but Sweets refused. Honestly, this was DEFINITELY the wiser solution.
The beauty of being within the walls is that the roads/alleys/paths are super narrow and people walk. However, vehicles use them too. Zoiks!
We arrived, made to our beautiful hotel near the Spanish Steps, and then went on a fun tour via golf cart. Our guide was an amazing woman who spoke multiple languages and arrived in Rome for love... she stayed because she fell in love with Rome. Sweets educated everyone on the Parthenon because... of course he did! Ha! He was enthralled and I think the whole tour appreciated his enthusiasm.
We did a tour of the Vatican... awful. It was like being guided through a sale barn. No time to ingest or appreciate. But, it was on Sweets' bucket list, so we did it. We took a tour with a local architect in a vintage Fiat. That was such a fun tour! A stone mason and an architect talking about the creation of all the structures! Finally... a tour via motorcycle and side car-- vehicle lanes essentially don't exist. They drive where they fit.
Drinking from the fountains (not Trevi), walking around the city, understanding more about the Roman Empire and the times after when so many materials were repurposed, and then the rise of the Catholic Church... Rome is a necessary place to learn from if you're open to it.
